Sheffield Hallam’s final-year students have launched a new group project called Vector Events to tackle food waste in the city.

This consists of a month-long campaign, from 8 March, called Don’t Waste The Taste.

The three students, currently studying Events Management and Experiential Marketing, are working with Food Works, a non-profit organisation.

The aim is to raise awareness about their work and gather recurring financial donations for them.

Food Works prevents produce from going to landfills by collecting unused leftovers from supermarkets and suppliers. The food is then repurposed into healthy and balanced meals that can be purchased for a minimum £1 donation.

Amy Jeffery, one of Vector Events’ project leaders, says: “We are trying to stress that the food is safe to eat and not visibly mouldy or any less tasty.”

Through their live Instagram Q&A session with Josie McCullen from Food Works, they explained that their meals change every day to provide as much variety as possible. By doing so, Food Works has saved 56 tonnes of food waste from going to landfills in January alone.

Amy says: “A challenge was thinking of ways to get the audience involved in our campaign. We are hosting a Surplus Afternoon Tea on zoom where attendees can make their own food from leftovers at home.”

The event will be held on 3 April and will involve two guest speakers talking about food waste prevention, as well as games and a prize giveaway.

Vector Events’ campaign consists of food waste hacks and statistics which are posted on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.

This project is due to conclude on 9 April as final-year students graduate.

Amy says: “We have made sure that our campaign design can be replicated by Food Works so they can do it again in the future.”

There are currently still spaces available for the Surplus Afternoon Tea event and tickets can be accessed through their Instagram page

Participants will have to make a weekly or monthly donation of any amount to Food Works, and email their confirmation summary to amy.vectorevents@gmail.com in order to receive their ticket.
