A researcher at the University of Sheffield has confirmed walking can improve mental health

Chris Blackmore from School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) spoke to Zoology student, Jeniva Chambers, about this development.

He said: “There’s a lot going on in the brain when you are on a walk, your senses are being stimulated, your vision and your hearing. You are taking in a lot of information without realizing it. If you take a lot of walks in the morning, it helps you sleep better.” 

The ScHARR Green Impact’s Wellbeing Walks blog has compiled a list of suggested routes and walks.  

These include, for example, from Meersbrook to Millhouses Park, Rivelin Valley Nature Trail and Rother Valley. 

The website says: “Staff and students should act within the government guidelines at all times, and only go on walks where it is safe to do so and with people they are permitted to meet with. 

Please do not travel unnecessarily to undertake one of these walks. If needs be, you can keep a bucket list of walks to go on when government restrictions ease.”

To be recompensated for your walks, the website says you can download Step Up Sheffield’s app: “You will be rewarded with BetterPoints to redeem on some great local offers such as coffee, cakes and sandwiches in campus cafes, high street vouchers, charity donations and there are also lots of prizes to be won.”
