A new banking hub has opened inside Tesco in Wath, marking a significant step in restoring face to face banking services in the local community.

This is the first time since the last high street branch closed in 2017.

In 2023 there was a long running campaign which was aiming to bring banking services back to the area due to the recent closure.

MP John Healey said “ The partnership between Cash Access UK and Tesco reflects the strength of that campaign and the support of local residents.”

It brings together six of the banks most commonly used by locals, which allows people to speak directly with their staff from their own bank on dedicated days.

The MP has been working with Wath Councillors Sheila Cowen and Dave Jackson, to try and find a long term solution to keeping these services open.

John Healey has said “Cash plays a vital role and many local residents depend on it everyday. Digital Banking isn’t for everyone, and hubs like this can make a real difference for locals and small businesses.”

In Wath centre they hold weekly markets which many residents visit so having a banking hub is seen as an essential for stall holders and also anyone who decides to visit.

The markets have been described by the MP as “restoring provision that had been missing since the last bank branch closed.”

Ms Emily Walker, Communications Officer, said the new hub reflects Cash Access UK’s continued commitment to maintaining local banking access.

They are wanting to focus on older residents who may not be able to access types of digital banking, especially elderly who struggle to travel outside of Wath.

John Healey said: “ I want to thank everyone who backed our original campaign, as well as Cash Access UK.”

Work is still underway to progress the hub’s permanent home, the new hub will be placed in Tesco car park, Wath Upon Dearne, S63 7DA.

The banking hub will  be open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and the banks which are available will be Santander, Natwest, Virgin Money, HSBC, Halifax and Lloyds. Each weekday will hold a different bank with their services.
