Sheffield City Council has suffered a \u2018regrettable\u2019 delay in producing months-overdue plans to go carbon neutral by 2030.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The local authority was due to publish an action report for the proposals within six months of declaring a climate emergency in February 2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cabinet member for environment and climate change Mark Jones said coronavirus was ‘not an excuse’ for failing to finalise the city\u2019s environmental action plan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Labour councillor said: \u201cWe didn\u2019t have an action plan until now and that is regrettable, I\u2019ll be honest with you.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d rather we were further ahead in the process, we are up against the clock, every delay is critical. Coronavirus has added to the problems but that\u2019s not an excuse. I\u2019m not going to pretend we are where we want to be.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sheffield\u2019s emissions are currently above 2,000 kilotons of CO2 a year. The report is set to show how the number can be reduced by 85% to 334 kilotons by 2030.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Labour group at first opposed a Green Party motion to have the deadline moved from 2050.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Green Party Councillor Martin Phipps said: \u201cTheir admission is useless. We are all lobbying for actions, not just words. Labours need to realise now with a hung council, all parties would have to work together.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFigures released by the UN Development Programme shows that two-thirds of people want to see urgent action by governments but Sheffield Council, and in particular Sheffield Labour, have shown a lack of leadership or urgency on this important issue.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIf your house is on fire, you wouldn\u2019t sit on it for two years \u2013 you act. The problems our environment faces require urgent action.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The council has also come under pressure over the report from local Extinction Rebellion demonstrators.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Molly Cowell, founder of the Sheffield Youth Strike 4 Climate, said: \u201cThe extent of the delay is unjustifiable and evidences how they view the climate crisis as a non-urgent issue, and also demonstrates the extent to which it has been ignored and put on hold for so long.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAny public acknowledgement of the climate crisis is a step forward, I only hope with the report we do not take two steps back.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe will not go far at all on hot air. We\u2019re running out of time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
