Theatres and arts venues in the UK have welcomed the announcement of \u00a3700 million in funding by the Chancellor.<\/p>\n
Rishi Sunak revealed the boost as part of the Treasury\u2019s economic recovery plans for the UK in his budget speech on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
South Yorkshire based arts venues have largely been welcoming of the announcement, as restrictions on social contact are set to be eased by June.<\/p>\n
Dan Bates, Chief Executive of Sheffield Theatres, said: \u201cI\u2019m pleased to hear there\u2019s further provision in the budget for arts, culture and heritage. as well as an extension to the support for freelancers.<\/p>\n
“This support is vital as we navigate the coming months and, we hope, begin welcoming audiences back.\u201d<\/p>\n
Venues in the region have been closed for months now, productions and national tours have also been cancelled at popular theatres such as the Lyceum in Sheffield.<\/p>\n
However, there is mounting criticism of the Budget set aside for the arts, as some in the industry fear it is not enough.<\/p>\n
Yorkshire based director and producer, Sam Dunstan said: \u201cIt\u2019s not enough. To cover sport, museums and all the different aspects it has to cover. It\u2019s just not going to be enough.<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s got to cross over to so many different arts organisations across the country which have so many different needs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Community arts projects have been allocated \u00a318.8 million, as well as \u00a377 million being put aside for similar projects in the devolved nations.<\/p>\n
Funds have also been announced for businesses as part of the so called \u2018restart grants\u2019 scheme, where venues can claim up to \u00a318,000 in aid.<\/p>\n
