Officers will begin patrolling dog walking areas such as parks after it was announced 63 dog thefts were recorded since last July.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most recent report came only yesterday when a woman was approached in Kilnhurst and two men attempted to steal her dog.<\/span><\/p>\n

Melanie Smith, a dog walker, said: \u201cI’m constantly nervous when I walk my dog that someone will come along and try and snatch her away from me so having a police presence there its very reassuring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Parks set to be patrolled include Wincobank, Shire Green and Firth Park areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement released this week, South Yorkshire Police said: \u201cWe know there is a great deal of concern about dog theft, nationally and locally, and we want to reassure you that investigations are ongoing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to reassure you that we, like other forces across the country, are actively carrying out enquiries linked to dog theft and attempted dog theft.\u201d<\/p>\n

The force listed helpful tips for owners wanting to protect their pets.<\/p>\n

These include: never leaving pets unattended, beware of strangers who show interest in your dog, and ensuring they have a collar and ID tag when in a public place.<\/p>\n

It is crucial that your dog can be identified by its microchip, so you must ensure all documentation is kept up to date.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the force said: \u201cPlease remain vigilant and report any incidents to us, and remain cautious of anyone you see acting in a suspicious manner. We will continue to act on this information.\u201d<\/p>\n

You should train your dog not to go out of your sight on walks, using an extending lead if the dog does not comply, and you should vary your walk times and routes and stay alert by avoiding using your phone.<\/p>\n

If you believe your dog has been stolen always report it to the police via 101 or call 999 in an emergency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
