{"id":46846,"date":"2023-02-10T13:44:49","date_gmt":"2023-02-10T13:44:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/?p=46846"},"modified":"2023-02-10T13:44:49","modified_gmt":"2023-02-10T13:44:49","slug":"sheffield-wednesday-cleared-of-overcrowding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/02\/10\/sheffield-wednesday-cleared-of-overcrowding\/","title":{"rendered":"SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY CLEARED OF OVERCROWDING"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Sheffield Wednesday have been cleared of overcrowding and safety concerns following last month\u2019s FA Cup victory over Newcastle United.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield City Council commissioned the safety review which found \u201call aspects\u201d of safety requirements were met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Joe Otten, Sheffield City Council, said: \u201cWe have carried out a thorough review looking at all the evidence available as well as speaking to fans, officials and stewards who were present on the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur findings show full compliance at the stadium and no issues relating to the matchday operation. Some minor changes have been identified to improve the overall experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigation concerned The Leppings End, where 4500 Newcastle fans watched a 2-1 loss on the 7th January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1989, at Hillsborough Stadium, 97 Liverpool fans died whilst hundreds were injured in a human crush in The Leppings End, whilst watching an FA cup semi final against Nottingham Forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans have complained about some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sport\/football\/article-11625359\/IAN-HERBERT-testimonies-Newcastle-fans-Hillsborough-chilling-ring-familiarity.html\">media coverage<\/a> being unnecessary reminders for the victims of the HIllsborough tragedy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Richard Stokes said: \u201cI believe the Daily Mail owes Sheffield Wednesday an apology for your very poor and scaremongering piece of journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope the Liverpool families affected take legal action against you for the physiological reminders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/02\/IMG_1478-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46885\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Matchday Complaints&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigation, overseen by the Sports Ground Safety Authority, was sparked by complaints of crushing circling online from the travelling Newcastle fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newcastle fans online complained that too many tickets were sold, and that there were not enough stewards, resulting in a crush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liam Dooley, Sheffield Wednesday Chief Operating Officer, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe would reiterate that the stewarding numbers within the visitors\u2019 section of the stadium for the Newcastle fixture exceeded the requirements of the Safety Certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Newcastle ticket allocation also complied completely with the Safety Certificate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans have praised Sheffield Wednesday and the council for the way they have handled the safety complaints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy Hodgson said: \u201cWednesday have handled this brilliantly, with the necessary steps and time taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome praise for the council too, good to see the two working together efficiently.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sheffield Wednesday have been cleared of overcrowding and safety concerns following last month\u2019s FA Cup victory over Newcastle United.
