{"id":48269,"date":"2023-03-02T14:50:24","date_gmt":"2023-03-02T14:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/?p=48269"},"modified":"2023-03-02T14:50:24","modified_gmt":"2023-03-02T14:50:24","slug":"businesses-welcome-council-u-turn-on-red-line-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/03\/02\/businesses-welcome-council-u-turn-on-red-line-proposal\/","title":{"rendered":"Businesses welcome council U-turn on red line proposals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Business owners on Sheffield&#8217;s Ecclesall Road have welcomed a decision to overturn the city council\u2019s red line plan following a petition launched by traders in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plans would have seen new road markings put in place on Abbeydale and Ecclesall Road, preventing vehicles from parking outside many businesses and allowing buses to pass through freely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twelve hour bus lanes, red line routes with camera surveillance and parking restrictions were all presented as possible ideas that could be implemented.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rules of the double red lines allow no leeway for temporary parking or stopping. They operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and do not require a time plate or sign.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul Robinson, of Robinson\u2019s Cobblers and Locksmith on Ecclesall Road, said: \u201cWe\u2019ve been here 40 years and if that would have gone through\u2026 bye-bye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd quite a few other ones [business] would have had to go [too].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/03\/Robinsons-Shop-Photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48282\" \/><figcaption>Robinson&#8217;s shop window where another petition can be seen <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement to scrap the plans was made on Monday night following a meeting held with businesses, run by Councillor Mazher Iqbal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst discussing the U-turn on the decision, council leader Terry Fox said in an online statement: \u201cWe believe in bus lane segregation. Look at London &#8211; it works really well there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe issue we have locally, however, is that implementing them in the current climate is not right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in the last hour, Green Councillors have said the plans haven\u2019t yet been scrapped, and a vote in the summer could still go ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Robinson added: \u201cI&#8217;m all for making things a little bit better and stuff like that, but it would have closed a hell of a lot of businesses that have been here for years.\u201c<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Business owners on Sheffield&#8217;s Ecclesall Road have welcomed a decision to overturn the city council\u2019s red line plan following a petition launched by traders in the area.
