Sheffield has come to a standstill after heavy snow overnight which made travel feel almost impossible. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Amber Level weather warning was issued yesterday after temperatures dropped below freezing and snow caused hazardous conditions on roads and pavements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multiple bus and tram services have been cancelled and the South Yorkshire Travel have advised commuters to check their Twitter and disruptions page<\/a> for updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weather has also led to the closure of many businesses across the city, including Atkinsons Department Store in The Moor who stated they were worried about the \u201csafety of our colleagues and customers\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheffield City Council have announced the closure of most primary and secondary schools today, as well as the temporary suspension of bin collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University of Sheffield have also advised students not to come in, closing the campus due to staff shortages and fears of the potential danger for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna Wilson, 20, a student at the University, said: \u201cI think shutting the Uni was a safe thing to do, the snowy conditions make it risky to come in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs students we\u2019re all used to online learning at this point, as we did it in the Pandemic for endless months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Streets Ahead, a city highways maintenance group within the Council, said: \u201cOur gritters are concentrating on clearing Sheffield priority routes this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPlease only travel if absolutely necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heavy snow has also caused branches from trees to fall, including one on Abbey Lane, which fell on to a parked car this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laura Mitchell, 55, a counsellor, has lived in Sheffield for nearly 30 years and said this is the second worst snow she has seen, coming second only to a patch of snowfall in the \u201890s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said: \u201cThis is definitely quite bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI saw vans struggling to get up my road this morning even after the snow plough had been through.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She lives on Ecclesall Road, where she said receives a lot of snow, along with Fulwood, Crookes, and other areas high up in Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve also seen multiple road accidents throughout the night and this morning, and the M62 has been closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Council have also advised anyone worried about rough sleepers in the snowy conditions to get in touch with their Street Outreach Team on 0800 066 5358.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
