{"id":49100,"date":"2023-03-10T16:09:59","date_gmt":"2023-03-10T16:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/?p=49100"},"modified":"2023-03-10T16:09:59","modified_gmt":"2023-03-10T16:09:59","slug":"growing-concern-as-illegal-drugs-and-harmful-chemicals-found-in-sheffield-rivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/03\/10\/growing-concern-as-illegal-drugs-and-harmful-chemicals-found-in-sheffield-rivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Illegal drugs and harmful chemicals: locals take on pollutants in Sheffield rivers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Illegal drugs and other chemicals of concern have been detected in Sheffield\u2019s rivers, say members of a new group formed to tackle river pollution in the city.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The River Wardens aim to hold accountable people responsible for pollution, and to promote public awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among their members are the Sheffield City Kayak Club, who regularly use the rivers in Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They recently took part in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/school-public-health\/environmental-research-group\/research\/emerging-chemical-contaminants\/\">research by the Imperial College London<\/a> that found traces of illegal drugs in the River Don.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research also found traces of pharmaceuticals, contraceptives, pesticides and explosives using a passive sampling device, which monitors and detects pollutants in the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neil Furmidge, 54, coach at Sheffield City Kayak Club said: \u201cThe worse readings were upstream near to Wharncliffe Wastewater Treatment Plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt seems significant amounts of chemicals of concern are passing through the treatment plant into the river.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/03\/Shef-Rivers-2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49105\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image: Neil Furmidge\/ShefNews<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Experienced kayakers tend to hit the waters when it is at high flow which is when the Combined Sewer Overflow\u2019s (CSO\u2019s) are operating and disposing sewage, according to Mr Furmidge<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cThe first thing you notice is the smell and then you&#8217;ll see the unpleasant stuff in the water.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not becoming uncommon to get quite ill from time to time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe worst case is when we had a paddler who ended up hospitalised for a few weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not illegal for water companies to release polluted water into the rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jaqueline Diaz-Neto, who worked at Yorkshire Water for 10 years, said: \u201cYou are only allowed to spill when water has reached its maximum flow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem for many people concerned is that there is no clear data that shows how many times water has overflown and more importantly what is in the water.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/03\/Shef-Rivers-5-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49106\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image: Neil Furmidge\/ShefNews<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0River Wardens group\u00a0was set up by Sheffielders looking to tackle pollution and sewage dumped in rivers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group had their second meeting at the Walkley Cottage Inn on Wednesday, to welcome and recruit volunteers to keep an eye out and report anything suspicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Blewitt, 74, retired fisherman and founder of the group said: \u201cI spent years cleaning the Don up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt makes me feel angry. Bloody angry because they\u2019re ruining my livelihood. They\u2019re ruining what I love. And they\u2019re ruining things what my children and my grandchildren should have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will also use equipment similar to the findings in Bradford which led to a \u00a31.6m fine for Yorkshire water last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Blewitt said: \u201cThe only way I know how to fight back is to get people involved and to say enough is enough.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel like Maximilien Robespierre in the French revolution. I\u2019m not saying chop their heads off but let them be responsible for their actions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Environment Agency recently admitted that it no longer has a target to inspect sewage work, which is \u201cdictated by pressure that comes from government and citizens\u201d, said Sheffield councillor for Walkley, Tom Hunt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coun Hunt said: \u201cA lot of this rests at the door of government who have frankly taken their eye off the ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt should not be down to citizens, but I\u2019m really pleased that citizens are stepping up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ShefNews has approached Yorkshire Water for comment. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Illegal drugs and other chemicals of concern have been detected in Sheffield\u2019s rivers, say members of a new group formed to tackle river pollution in the city.\u00a0 The River Wardens aim to hold accountable people responsible for pollution, and to promote public awareness.
