St Patrick\u2019s Day celebrations are in full swing across Sheffield. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Irish pubs throughout the city are hosting activities all day for people to enjoy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Owners of Fagan\u2019s pub on Broad Lane have even shut the road to hold the celebrations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The famous Sheffield pub recently nearly closed as the landlords decided to retire but nine new owners, including Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders, stepped in to save it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Molly Malones is offering live music from 3pm till 2am. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sophia Powell, 23, a bartender at The Grapes said: \u201cEven though it\u2019s one of the most hectic days of the year for us being an Irish pub, it\u2019s fun to see people in their fancy dress. We\u2019ve had people here since half 11 this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ShefNews visited the traditional Irish pub on Friday afternoon to see how the celebrations were coming along. The pub-goers were already spilling out onto the streets as people in green shirts and Guinness hats crowded the rooms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Haley Fletcher, 51, said: \u201cI\u2019ve been going out for St Patrick\u2019s day for the last 30 years. My dad was Irish so I like to come out to celebrate it for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“You have to have a Guinness in an Irish pub for St Patrick\u2019s day, don\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Steve Fletcher, 54, said: \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of Irish people in Sheffield so today is always a fun day to be out. The pubs are busy and we\u2019ll probably be out all day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark Wilkinson, 48, said: \u201cI was born in Dublin. It\u2019s a celebration of heritage and memories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It\u2019s a fun day to dress up and we\u2019re drinking the northern way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fran McConville from the Sheffield Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) said: \u201cBeing Irish and having that sense of community is really important, especially here in Sheffield. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It should be a good days craic. It\u2019s a really important day for us to come together and celebrate our culture. It\u2019s a good opportunity for everyone to let their hair down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Having an Irish community here has been a major aspect of how much I\u2019ve enjoyed Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It\u2019s a great community to be a part of, it’s not just exclusive for Irish people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later on Friday night, the student’s union at the University of Sheffield is hosting a student-only club night offering non-stop Irish music. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cavendish have also joined in on the celebrations as they are hosting a performance from the Sheffield Irish Dance Society at 6.30pm which will be free to watch. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
