{"id":49789,"date":"2023-03-23T12:54:04","date_gmt":"2023-03-23T12:54:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/?p=49789"},"modified":"2023-03-23T12:54:04","modified_gmt":"2023-03-23T12:54:04","slug":"sheffield-campaigners-hope-to-win-over-mayor-for-more-public-control-over-bus-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/03\/23\/sheffield-campaigners-hope-to-win-over-mayor-for-more-public-control-over-bus-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield campaigners hope to win over Mayor for more public control over bus services."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sheffield campaigners for \u2018regular and reliable\u2019 bus services across South Yorkshire protested for change this week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018Better Buses for South Yorkshire\u2019 team congregated outside South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) on 21 March 2022, chanting their rendition of \u2018the wheels on the bus\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaigners are hoping to spread awareness on the human impacts of public transport that \u2018just does not turn up\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group are calling for the enforcement of \u2018franchising\u2019, with the aim of giving the public more control over the bus service, allowing them to prioritise \u2018punctuality over profits\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u2018Better Buses For South Yorkshire\u2019 campaigning outside the SYMCA\" width=\"1080\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9ihgBCBQ3MM?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8216;Better Buses&#8217; campaigners outside the SYMCA building<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>George Arthur, a campaigner said: \u201cSouth Yorkshire Better Buses have been putting pressure on Mayor Oliver Coppard to improve our bus services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we really want to see is public ownership of the buses, getting rid of the private companies and bringing everything back to us like it used to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very much a half-way house.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 74-year-old worries the current services are inaccessible for both students and elderly people, who rely heavily on buses and are spending a lot of money to ride them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He hopes  franchising would lead to cheaper fares, better routes and adjustments to timetables, meaning work, healthcare and education do not take a hit when &#8216;unreliable&#8217; buses do not arrive.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaign took place at 1pm on Tuesday, whilst an important meeting was taking place between local politicians such as Mr Coppard, and the big bus companies, to discuss the prospect of turning South Yorkshire\u2019s buses into a franchise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the scheme is successful, Sheffield will be following the lead of Manchester and Liverpool City Region who are all well underway with the process.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83e\udd14 How has handing control of your buses to private companies made reliability worse?<br><br>\ud83d\ude8d We used to have spare vehicles in case one broke down.
