Some survivors may expirence issues like physical feelings of numbness and muscle weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main effect the association wants to highlight this year is aphasia, which is when someone who suffers a stroke experiences issues with their speech and communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">May is <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StrokeAwarenessMonth?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#StrokeAwarenessMonth<\/a><br><br>RightCare has a Stroke Toolkit &amp; assessment tool, developed with the National Stroke Programme,<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NHSGIRFT?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NHSGIRFT<\/a> &amp; supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheStrokeAssoc?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TheStrokeAssoc<\/a>. It reflects the priorities in stroke prevention, identification, acute care &amp; rehab:<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uRgSwyYBZf\">https:\/\/t.co\/uRgSwyYBZf<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NHS RightCare (@nhsrightcare) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nhsrightcare\/status\/1653685840189718529?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 3, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The NHS guidance on how to spot a stroke<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FAST acronym lists too look out for the person Face Arms Speach and Time to call 911.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The acronym lists that a sufferers Face might be drooped on one side, usually on the left. They might not be able to smile as both their eyes and mouth can become semi or fully paralyzed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suffer may also have problem lifting their Arms or keeping them up as they feel numb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another sign to spot out is the persons speech. Due to their mouth being drooped, their speech may also be slurred or garbled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you notice these sign call 9-1-1 straight away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other signs to look out for before physical symptoms show is a that a person might struggle with their cognitive skills and struggle to comprehend or process any information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There could also be a change in mood and some memory loss around the time one might experience a stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020 Elizabeth Argent was 15 when her mum, 52 had a stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elizabeth remembered the day being \u201ca mad rush of emotions and actions, I had no idea what was going on exactly and the doctors weren\u2019t telling me much as I was too young.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elizabeth spent all day in the hospital next to her mum, unable to talk to her or understand what the doctors were doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How a parent having a stroke can impact a family<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stroke association explained that stroke is one of the leading causes of disability in the UK<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some strokes vary person to person and can lead to sevre health issues, such as becoming disabled and unable to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elizabeth\u2019s mum\u2019s stroke had initially left her paralyzed on her left side and unable to speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe experienced an alien role reversal. I was now the caregiver in the house and was the one always worrying about her. It was almost like I was a mother and she was my toddler.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Elizabeth\u2019s teenage years she was balancing school, GCSE\u2019s and looking after her mum as she soon had to stop working, leading to her getting a small part-time job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a particularly hard time managing everything with very little support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stroke association hosts a stroke support group every 2nd and 3rd Monday of the month in Sheffield at the Salvation Army Citadel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This month the association will also be organising events from mid-may to raise awareness and support families affected by stroke in Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This May, we are thinking about Stroke Awareness.  Technology can be great to keep connected to but people with aphasia can find it challenging to get online.
