{"id":52173,"date":"2023-05-05T17:42:46","date_gmt":"2023-05-05T16:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/?p=52173"},"modified":"2023-05-05T17:42:46","modified_gmt":"2023-05-05T16:42:46","slug":"sheffield-local-elections-five-key-moments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/05\/05\/sheffield-local-elections-five-key-moments\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield local elections: five key moments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sheffield city council elections took place on Thursday, with thousands travelling to the polling stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These elections were slated as one to watch as Labour looked to reinforce their majority in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the biggest moments from the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Still no overall control of the council<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Labour supporters were hopeful that the recent national surge in Labour support would mean the party would for the first-time gain \u2018overall control\u2019 of Sheffield council, where their majority is so much that they take full control of council operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But while the election saw a few changes in constituencies across the city, there was no significant change, with no party having established control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Labour retained its 39 seats; losing one from Green, and winning one right back from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The elections also saw a steady (and unchanged) 29 seats for the Liberal Democrat party, 14 for the Green party and the Conservative party retains its one seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on the council having no majority, Shaffaq Mohammed said: \u201cThe Green party have to choose (an elected council leader), [\u2026] if they choose Labour, it will be nobody locally controlling things, it\u2019ll be somebody on a national level in London telling Sheffield what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Greens win Hillsborough<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one of the biggest developments of the day, Hillsborough was lost by Labour and picked up by the Green party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greens Councillor Christine Gilligan Kubo said: \u201cWe\u2019re very happy &#8211; it\u2019s fantastic, and a deserved result because we worked so hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also commended Councillor Toby Mallinson on his dogged work in winning the seat in Hillsborough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Labour take Nether Edge and Sharrow<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Labour party\u2019s loss in Hillsborough is somewhat rectified by the fact the party has gained a seat in Nether Edge and Sharrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green\u2019s loss in Nether Edge and Sharrow was a tough pill to swallow for party members. Councillor Gilligan Yubo said their candidate, Bev Bennett, \u201cworked very hard and did her best, it\u2019s very sad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have to say, the results across the city are somewhat disappointing when compared to our performance nationally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She noted that there was a meeting planned for later that day where members of the party would meet to discuss the future of the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trade Union and Socialist Coalition gains<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The TUSC nearly doubled their total votes from the year before, averaging 105 votes per ward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alistair Tice, the election agent for the party, said: \u201cIt\u2019s one of the first times we\u2019ve managed to stand in all wards since the 60s \u2013 we\u2019re over the moon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Labour leadership troubles<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After months of uncertainty, Sheffield Council Terry Fox confirmed on Friday he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-south-yorkshire-65492409\">stepping down.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Fox has been facing increasing pressure over a critical report into the council&#8217;s handling of a controversial tree-felling operation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: It&#39;s understood Sheffield Council Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CllrTerry_Fox?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CllrTerry_Fox<\/a>  is standing down.  <br>Sheffield&#39;s election count is not yet underway but Coun Fox is expected to resign as Labour Leader.
