{"id":52455,"date":"2023-05-11T14:40:51","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T13:40:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/?p=52455"},"modified":"2023-05-11T14:40:51","modified_gmt":"2023-05-11T13:40:51","slug":"sheffields-clean-air-zone-three-months-on-has-it-worked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/05\/11\/sheffields-clean-air-zone-three-months-on-has-it-worked\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield&#8217;s Clean Air zone three months on &#8211; has it worked?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sheffield\u2019s Clean Air zone (CAZ) was introduced in February this year to reduce emissions in the city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It charges drivers whose cars produce dangerous amounts of nitrogen dioxide and other particulates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much have people been charged?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three months on from its implementation, new figures have revealed that Sheffield\u2019s CAZ generated \u00a3210,000 in fees in its first month of operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between February 27 and March 31, 6986 penalties were awarded for non-payment in the zone, totalling \u00a335,060.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The council also confirmed that drivers paid an additional \u00a3175,512 in fees for non-compliance with emission goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/05\/sheff-CAZ-map-2-1024x660.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52518\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Sheffield Clean Air Zone covers the city centre and inner ring road.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are the fees?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The zone charges \u00a310 to smaller vehicles, whilst buses and lorries pay \u00a350 a day to enter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drivers can pay up to six days before or after they enter the zone via the council website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If vehicle owners do not pay this fee, they may receive a fine of up to \u00a3120.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Has it worked?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will Stewart, Director of Investment, Climate Change and Planning at Sheffield City Council, said: \u201cThe government benchmarks can only really be drawn together in the year following the first year of implementation so it will only be in early 2024 when we have got all of the data together that we will know that the clean air zone has had the impact that we want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur modelling and our assumptions show\u2026 that actually we should meet compliance in the year 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How has the public reacted?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the goal of improving air quality in the city, the CAZ has faced criticism from drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark Stevenson, 60, from Sheffield, said: \u201cMy main gripe with the CAZ is how unfair the criteria for charging has been set out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI run a diesel van, it has the same emissions as a diesel car, yet diesel cars of which there are many are running in and out all day long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile his next door neighbour is running three cars all diesel in and out every day.
