autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8216;Better Buses for South Yorkshire&#8217; and &#8216;Act Now&#8217; are campaigning for a change in the current bus system.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BBSY protested in the hopes of \u2018franchising\u2019 the bus system and demanded the introduction of \u2018hopper fares&#8217; in South Yorkshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is a hopper fare<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hopper fare is a \u00a31.75 bus ticket which would grant unlimited journeys between bus routes and companies if the journey is completed within an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Topham, 24, said: \u201cOne of the big things is the current bus system is legally prohibited from introducing a hopper fare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe only way we can get this really, basic kind of ticket that every other European country has, is by bringing our buses into public control, it&#8217;s not just an ideological point of view, it&#8217;s an issue of bread-and-butter delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were joined on the day by Act Now, a street theatre group that promote environmentally sustainable causes throughout South Yorkshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the members dressed in a rabbit costume to the protest, a reference to the group&#8217;s push to introduce hopper fares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"52480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/05\/20230509_133925-1-843x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mr Teasdale is suited up in a rabbit costume in a witty reference to the &#8216;hopper&#8217; fares.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richard Teasdale, the man in the costume, used rabbit-related jokes to make his point about how the county\u2019s bus system needs to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Teasdale, who is in his 50s, told ShefNews that the current bus system is not efficient enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said: &#8220;It&#8217;s just not working, ever since privatisation, it\u2019s basically got worse, we really need franchising.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Franchising the business<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their slogan, \u2018Franchising for Fair Fares\u2019, was chanted throughout the streets, and emphasized the need for the South Yorkshire Mayoral Authority to have more input on how the bus system is operated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Teasdale gave a further explanation about what franchising South Yorkshire buses will mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said: \u201cIt won&#8217;t be owned by the public and will still be run by operatives, but the South Yorkshire Mayoral Authority will decide what routes to put on and so on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey really need to change the model totally and how they can deal with bus routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It is being shown that the system works in London and Manchester.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/05\/20230509_131702-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52479\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Protestors have gathered in front of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Topham said of the protests: \u201cIt was fantastic.
