{"id":52513,"date":"2023-05-11T15:35:10","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T14:35:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/?p=52513"},"modified":"2023-05-11T15:35:10","modified_gmt":"2023-05-11T14:35:10","slug":"people-in-sheffield-raise-concerns-over-the-safety-of-public-transport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/05\/11\/people-in-sheffield-raise-concerns-over-the-safety-of-public-transport\/","title":{"rendered":"People in Sheffield raise concerns over the safety of public transport"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>People in Sheffield are questioning the safety of vehicles in and around the city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The busy streets of Sheffield have public transport flooding high streets with trams, buses and cyclists all using the roads in and around the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People are questioning the safety for pedestrians with the high volume of oncoming traffic, added with the narrow roads and lack of pavement parking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Erith Jones, who lives in Sheffield said: &#8220;I haven&#8217;t seen any accidents personally but I\u2019ve been going to this tram stop for years now and I\u2019ve always had to be careful when I\u2019ve crossed the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey aren\u2019t easy to see come round the corner, and they aren\u2019t always easy to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Public transport especially in the city centre isn\u2019t always safe, and traffic can cause many incidents.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rail Accident Investigation Branch produced a report on the official government website which said that the latter part of 2021 saw a number of very serious, and some fatal, interactions between people and trams, two of which are now subject to investigation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was 61 tram-related accidents from January 2022 to May 10 this year, 17 of these related to the Sheffield Supertram system.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield City Council announced a Transport Strategy in 2019 which will carry on through to 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> It is a long-term plan to help deal with the city\u2019s pressing public transport issues and safety for pedestrians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/05\/Tram-stop-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52579\" width=\"380\" height=\"506\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cathedral tram stop is particularly busy on West Street.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The strategy aims to deliver \u201cfast, more reliable and cleaner journeys\u201d for people travelling in and around the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will reduce dependency on cars and free up space on our roads, meaning more access for pedestrians and less accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alison Colley, a regular Sheffield bus user said: \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of blind spots which can make it difficult to see oncoming traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t always see vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey can be very dangerous when they speed up, especially for older people who might struggle crossing the road.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People in Sheffield are questioning the safety of vehicles in and around the city centre.
