It outlined that 0% of rivers in England were of good or high quality, and 85% of river stretches fall below good ecological standards. Read the full report <a href=\"https:\/\/theriverstrust.org\/rivers-report-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simon Ogden, chair of Sheaf and Porter River Trust, said he was \u2018not surprised\u2019 to hear these statistics, and commented further saying: \u201cWe\u2019ve seen a huge amount of improvement over the last 40 years and I think we were assuming that that improvement would continue, but there&#8217;s a lot of evidence now that at best it&#8217;s flatlining and at worst it&#8217;s actually getting worse again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Activity is happening!!!<br>Keep abreast of the latest developments at the Sheffield&#39;s Castle site with our <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/m27kjsrGHx\">https:\/\/t.co\/m27kjsrGHx<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bsVDuAdBD3\">https:\/\/t.co\/bsVDuAdBD3<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Sheaf and Porter Rivers Trust (@Sheaf_Porter_RT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sheaf_Porter_RT\/status\/1758172678421164414?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 15, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Sheffield the River Don has seen a major revival over the last century with important species of plants and wildlife returning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Edward Shaw, 39, the managing director of Don Catchment Rivers Trust, said: \u201cFor much of the last century and up until about the 1980s the River Don was ecologically dead. Improved management of sewage and regulation of industry has led to massive improvements to water quality, meaning many species have returned to the Don. However, the river is still too polluted for the most pollution sensitive species, which is why in 2022 it was classed as being in poor ecological health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sam Turpin, 21, runs a Sheffield based open water swimming club \u2018Nips Swim Sheffield\u2019. He believes not enough is being done to protect our rivers: \u201cI think that the UK Government generally should be doing more to recognise the rights of nature. We all benefit from it and it\u2019s sad to see how far behind this country is compared to others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Shaw says the future of clean rivers relies on sustainable drainage systems: \u201cWe would like to see more sustainable drainage systems. More investment is needed from Yorkshire Water to deal with sewage pollution.
