{"id":57690,"date":"2024-03-15T10:31:49","date_gmt":"2024-03-15T10:31:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=57690"},"modified":"2024-03-15T11:18:26","modified_gmt":"2024-03-15T11:18:26","slug":"man-climbs-height-of-everest-in-mental-health-challenge-after-cousin-took-her-own-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/03\/15\/man-climbs-height-of-everest-in-mental-health-challenge-after-cousin-took-her-own-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Man climbs height of Everest in mental health challenge after cousin took her own life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A hospitality worker from Sheffield has raised over \u00a31,500 for a mental health charity in memory of his cousin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simon Watts, from Greystones, spent last weekend walking and running up and down the hill in Bingham Park, to climb the height of the world\u2019s highest mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The endurance challenge, known as \u2018Everesting\u2019, is becoming more common in the cycling community, but Simon decided to do it entirely on foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Watts said: \u201cI had no sleep. I started at about 2 in the morning on Saturday and went through until about 8 in the evening on Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In total he climbed 30,000 feet across the weekend of his 30th birthday, which coincidentally took 30 hours to complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-03-12-at-15.55.20-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57692\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Simon during the challenge in Bingham Park<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The money raised will go towards Mind Over Mountains, a charity who offer mental health support through outdoor experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Watts has felt strongly about spreading awareness for mental health issues since he lost his friend to suicide during the pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This drive was re-ignited recently after his cousin, Rachel, took her own life last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cIt was a huge shock to the whole family\u2026 she was the larger-than-life character, really motivating, really energetic, really friendly,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe was incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Watts said the challenge gave him time to reflect on losing Rachel, and his highlight of the fundraising has been the overwhelming support from strangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cChallenges like this are a great way of making noise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Simon 21 hours into the challenge\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YD_zbbFHQN4?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Simon coming up to the 21st hour of the challenge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Later this year, in May, he plans to cycle all the way to Australia, where Rachel lived, to raise more money for mental health support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helen Wooldridge, from Mind Over Mountains, said Simon\u2019s fundraising has been of incredible value to the charity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cNot only has he raised an incredible amount of money by achieving this amazing feat, but he also shared the message about mental health awareness with so many people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ian Sansbury, CEO of Mind Over Mountains, added: \u201cThe need is huge, and what Simon has done will help us so much, we are humbled by his achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simon\u2019s fundraising page can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justgiving.com\/page\/everesting-for-rach\" title=\"\">here<\/a>, and you can find more information on Mind Over Mountains\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/mindovermountains.org.uk\/\" title=\"\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend, Simon Watts raised over \u00a31,500 by climbing 30,000 feet in memory of his cousin who took her own life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":599,"featured_media":57691,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[17,21,82],"tags":[44,65,38,973],"class_list":["post-57690","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-charity","category-news","category-top-story","tag-fundraising","tag-mental-health","tag-sheffield","tag-suicide-prevention"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
