{"id":57904,"date":"2024-03-15T14:59:29","date_gmt":"2024-03-15T14:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=57904"},"modified":"2024-03-15T14:59:29","modified_gmt":"2024-03-15T14:59:29","slug":"sheffield-teaching-hospital-opens-a-4-million-suite-to-speed-up-wait-times-for-cancer-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/03\/15\/sheffield-teaching-hospital-opens-a-4-million-suite-to-speed-up-wait-times-for-cancer-treatment\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield Teaching Hospital opens a \u00a34 million suite to speed up wait times for cancer treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A new nuclear medicine and molecular radiotherapy facility will be able to detect and treat cancer and bring down waiting lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has officially opened in Western Park Cancer Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new facility can detect, treat tumours and visualise organ systems which will help the specialist cancer hospital deliver new treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It aims to create new opportunities for patients across the region to take part in leading national and international cancer research trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brand new facility was officially opened by South Yorkshire&#8217;s Mayor Oliver Coppard at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the 8 March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also in attendance were former FIFA and FA football referee, Weston Park Cancer Charity Patron Uriah Rennie, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Chief Executive Kirsten Major, and nuclear medicine patient Russel Dickens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They toured the new departments including the diagnostic and treatment areas, special therapy preparation rooms, and a hybrid SPECTI-CT.                                                                                                                                                                               <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"474\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Capture-cancer-2-1024x474.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57923\" style=\"width:733px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Capture-cancer-2-1024x474.png 1024w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Capture-cancer-2-980x453.png 980w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Capture-cancer-2-480x222.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">New diagnostic and treatment areas open<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Consultant Clinical Scientist Anna Hallam said:\u00a0\u201cThis purpose-built suite enables us to offer all our patients access to the latest advances in nuclear medicine diagnostic imaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As well as the opportunity for cancer patients to access new, exciting treatments sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening ceremony was supported by Western Park Cancer Charity, following their investment in refurbishing the molecular radiotherapy inpatient suite in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weston Park Cancer Charity CEO Emma Clarke said<strong>:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWeston Park Cancer Charity is delighted to support today\u2019s event which launches these incredible enhancements to the nuclear medicine facility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Cancer patients across our region will benefit from these new technologies and future research trials.
