{"id":58501,"date":"2024-03-22T14:01:13","date_gmt":"2024-03-22T14:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=58501"},"modified":"2024-03-22T14:01:13","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T14:01:13","slug":"new-lease-signed-in-first-stage-to-reopen-doncaster-sheffield-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/03\/22\/new-lease-signed-in-first-stage-to-reopen-doncaster-sheffield-airport\/","title":{"rendered":"New lease signed in first stage to reopen Doncaster Sheffield airport"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An operator is now being sought to run Doncaster Airport after the local authority secured a 125-year lease to run the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones made the announcement yesterday, after a year of negotiations with the landowners Peel Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campaigners had been fighting to save the transport hub since it was closed by Peel in November 2022, who claimed running costs were too high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayor Jones said: \u201cI would like to personally thank Doncaster Council officers who have worked tirelessly with great dedication, insight, determination and skill to get us where we are today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reaction from the public following the announcement was positive with people supporting the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One comment said:  \u201cFantastic news for our new city, now we will see the region grow, thanks to all involved!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another said:  \u201cThis is fantastic news, congratulations to you and the team. An excellent example of working together as one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next stage in the process will be to appoint an airport operator to manage the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Yorkshire Combined Authority has made \u00a3138 million available to fund the reopening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/132630036_dsa3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/132630036_dsa3.jpg 976w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/132630036_dsa3-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 976px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said: \u201cI know people want us to move quickly, and we will, but I have said from the start, we will only ever do things in a way that protects taxpayers while giving both DSA and South Yorkshire the brightest possible future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been overflowing support from Facebook groups created to fight for the reopening of the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One group said: \u201cisn\u2019t it just the best news that we have all desperately been waiting for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An ex-worker at the airport said: \u201cI can\u2019t wait to get my old job back, and I look forward to a big reunion party with all the staff who lost their jobs, and also welcome new staff to the wonderful friendly place of Doncaster airport.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lease came after Sheffield\u2019s city council cabinet gave their unanimous support to the reopening of DSA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It forms part of the South Yorkshire Airport city programme which is dedicated to working towards reopening the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It focuses on the technical, legal, procurement and financial work needed to get the project off the ground.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An operator is now being sought to run Doncaster Airport after the local authority secured a 125-year lease to run the site.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":638,"featured_media":58503,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[21],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-58501","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
