uncovered by archaeologists at the Sheffield Castle excavation site.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes from their 10-week excavation dig of the castle&#8217;s medieval gatehouse, where they\u2019ve discovered unmapped furnaces from the steel working process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The excavation site is now open to the public to visit, who are able to book to have a dig themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past week archaeology lovers have had the pleasure of discovering the unmapped furnaces and the top of the mot of the castle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otis Gilbert, an archaeologist volunteer on the project said: \u201cIt was lovely to see the crucible furnaces that the professional archaeologists of Wessex had found, they were quite marvellous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is still six weeks left on the excavation and many are excited to see what else can be discovered for the general public to view.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"714\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/WALL-OF-CASTLE-1024x714.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/WALL-OF-CASTLE-980x683.jpg 980w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/WALL-OF-CASTLE-480x334.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Martin Gorman, a volunteer at Friends of the Castle said: \u201cAt this stage we don\u2019t know what will be found so there is a level of excitement about what lies beneath the surface.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/friendsofsheffieldcastle.org.uk\/\" title=\"\">Friends of the Castle<\/a> is the public face of the Regeneration project and are a charitable group run by volunteers set up 10 years ago to \u2018promote and protect the remains and history of Sheffield Castle\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gorman said: \u201cThe Sheffield Castle Regeneration project should be the catalyst for the general improvement in the whole of Castlegate, the historical heart of the city.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Friends of the Castle hope that if and when the remainders of the castle are found, they will be able to display them permanently on view to the public.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the future they hope to create a visitor experience dedicated to the entirety of the Castles history and the cities beginnings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otis Gilbert said: \u201cHopefully if the regeneration goes well people will be able to see the gatehouse, it would be quite a nice tourist attraction for the
