<\/figure>\n\n\n\nBirley resident, Mark Harrington, 42, said: \u2018It is scary isn\u2019t it, you want to send kids to school, feeling safe and secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou want to worry about how they are doing in class and things like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSchools are meant to be a safe place for children, and it is honestly a shame and quite frightening that an incident like this has happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI mean I know if I was a parent I would be shaken up, you just hope that we don\u2019t see incidents like this ever again really.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the scene today, two police officers patrolled each entrance, the visitor entrance and the student entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Assistant chief constable Dan Thorpe delivered a statement outside the school alongside Birley Academy headteacher Victoria Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ACC Thorpe said: \u201cI know this will have been a frightening ordeal for everyone involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Birley is a close-knit community and while these events concluded in a swift arrest, it will no doubt cause ongoing concern.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also acknowledged content circulating social media relating to the incident, urged people to refrain from posting images, footage and social media, as it would be harmful for their investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added: “Our officers will remain here in Birley for the rest of today and in the coming days. If you are worried or would like to discuss what has happened with the police, please do not hesitate to approach them. We are here for you to make sure you feel safe in your local area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
