It was devastating to see my home in such a state. They stole important documents and a family wedding ring which spanned over six decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cIt\u2019s not about the material, or even sentimental items you lose, it&#8217;s about your safety being threatened. I now feel vulnerable in my own home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily believes the current penalties aren&#8217;t harsh enough to deter burglars, which she claims leads to many criminals re-offending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petition has gained 707 signatures so far, and has been noticed by Labour MP Stephanie Peacock for Barnsley East, who claimed it was an important matter which she would be taking to Downing Street.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpermalink.php%3Fstory_fbid%3Dpfbid0q7MBFZChPWHJrsatCynFEEJdm26X21xQ1PMcnnHFPjRdxo9qbomiXAptEGVTWgJkl%26id%3D100083627197743&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500&amp;is_preview=true\" width=\"500\" height=\"564\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Emily is hopeful the petition will bring about positive change to make Barnsley, and the entire nation, safer &#8211; especially with Ms Peacock mentioning she would raise the proposals with the appropriate governing minister in the House of Commons next month.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petition calls for a minimum three year sentence for convicted burglars, whilst re-offending criminals should receive five year sentences. All of which should be carried out to the full term.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is following a rise in burglars being released from as early as 60 days to six months, due to the current capacity crisis amongst prisons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily said: \u201cCriminals shouldn\u2019t be released when they\u2019re still a threat to the public. I feel failed by law enforcement when they release people who they know are dangerous back into society.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily is also campaigning for better prevention measures to be enforced in her local area.
