{"id":62083,"date":"2025-02-14T10:21:29","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T10:21:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=62083"},"modified":"2025-02-14T10:21:30","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T10:21:30","slug":"new-6m-bridge-in-catcliffe-aims-to-prevent-future-flooding-but-will-it-be-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/02\/14\/new-6m-bridge-in-catcliffe-aims-to-prevent-future-flooding-but-will-it-be-enough\/","title":{"rendered":"New \u00a36m bridge in Catcliffe aims to prevent future flooding, but will it be enough?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A new bridge on Treeton Lane will be fitted with a thinner deck to allow more water to flow underneath it, following flood risks identified during Storm Babet in October 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was announced earlier this week in RMBC\u2019s budget plans that \u00a36 million will be used for the bridge project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Jamie Baggaley of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC), said: \u201cMyself and the council leadership want to do all that we can to reduce the flood risks in Catcliffe and that\u2019s why \u00a36 million of our budget will facilitate these works over the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter the flooding of Storm Babet, several options were considered to reduce the risk of future flood damage and changes to the bridge have been identified as the most viable option.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXduYQCifIs7CP1IuE5PcBbmJb_sexcdK6jhjMtbuHk8etGV15UVi1LoAH2_WxHlJg_LzLwwcQAReHI0ULpjwgy6Mniu3h41diSSYO-bXXme2JWybP4_md_RRU3EyHEXygzNwjhxkw?key=T0C6vxK2ffeIhyqFoKs_W_6h\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:623px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Google, B6067 bridge, Treeton Lane)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hundreds of people in Catcliffe and surrounding villages like Waverley were evacuated from their homes after four days of extreme rainfall in South Yorkshire between 18 October and 21 October 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue Griffith, 62, of Ashbourne Way, Waverley, a neighbouring village to Catcliffe, said: \u201cThis area has been desperate for years. A new bridge with a higher opening will be a good idea and will absolutely help the flow of the Rother but we need constant monitoring. If flood barriers like at Canklow Meadow are closed down-river and others are open up-river, then the water will just back up further along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf the council keeps removing natural defences like all the trees, it will be so hard to deal with water levels. We were underwater in 2023 so I doubt one investment in the bridge will fix things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Locals remain adamant that Waverley\u2019s transformation from Orgreave Colliery to a modern residential village has increased flood risks in the area. Tarmac roads and concrete pavements among 1,800 new residential plots limit the amount of water that can be infiltrated into the ground.
