{"id":62244,"date":"2025-02-20T10:04:41","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T10:04:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=62244"},"modified":"2025-05-08T14:00:42","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T14:00:42","slug":"people-concerned-over-new-proposals-to-tackle-speeding-in-rotherham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/02\/20\/people-concerned-over-new-proposals-to-tackle-speeding-in-rotherham\/","title":{"rendered":"People concerned over new proposals to tackle speeding in Rotherham"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Rotherham Borough Council is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rotherham.gov.uk\/consultation-feedback\/moorgate-broom-network-improvements\/4\">proposing improvements to Broom Valley Road<\/a> in efforts to deter speeding, but people who live in the area remain unhopeful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The street would become a 20 mph (miles-per-hour) zone with additional road humps, but would be self-enforcing and operational without a reliance on police intervention.&nbsp; People are worried given the proximity of the Broom Valley Road Community School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrew Wilson, 44, who lives on Broom Valley Road, said: \u201cIn a dream world, there\u2019s automatic stingers that come out of the curb to calm the speeding. Unless there\u2019s police there to enforce it, nothing will get done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Wilson moved onto the street around 14 years ago, and said the speeding has been an issue even since then, and is an issue especially in the evenings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Wilson added: \u201cPeople fly past here three times the speed limit, and it\u2019s a 30 mph road and there&#8217;s speed bumps closer on the bit closer to town. Temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXfHh6PAZB8bahld0APBunbIztaD5XLIyB3wVei8pH6IxJCO329MtcO8KXuqIR0_5OhkqQdOLQfX8aSI4P54GTN2xRwXxpsb68-nWTLZLzDbeFaJtKxVUrQOi2i4OeFhywqmNCQv3A?key=hnqJqSHVG1gR8QWI-0LLGfOs\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">One of the bollards on the road that are painted to look like children.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Broom Valley Community School is situated on the street, and there are bollards painted like school children to remind motorists to be responsible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Johnson added: \u201cIt will be a kid, one day, that gets hit. Until then, I don\u2019t think much will really get done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rotherham.gov.uk\/downloads\/file\/2577\/wellgate-broom-road-and-broom-valley-road-cycle-routes-consultation-pack\">favoured planned approach<\/a> for the road would see it cease to be a \u2018through-road\u2019 and it could effectively be pedestrianised, alongside the implementation of the 20 mph zone, if further consultations agreed to reroute buses on the road all together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These road improvements follow the new bike lanes completed on Clifton roundabout and Broom Road last year, focusing on reducing congestion and capacity on the road.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXdNpMVoz3Qesh8l-QSgAmRSXcCm_tmshd6o9dINGL96_yThLUnfb0ZiMBNrJgziC2JXGAF8apj7Fm9Sq4ZVb4D7MuwPOhnthoGfGBVtjsoqe9UJFahLdHogtiS8w7QKpXZcaiYY?key=hnqJqSHVG1gR8QWI-0LLGfOs\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A sign posted along the road that encourages residents to fill out a short survey about the proposed road changes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Consultations for the road will end on 30th April 2025.
