{"id":62250,"date":"2025-02-20T10:44:48","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T10:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=62250"},"modified":"2025-05-08T13:36:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T13:36:11","slug":"application-for-price-cut-train-from-sheffield-to-kings-cross-put-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/02\/20\/application-for-price-cut-train-from-sheffield-to-kings-cross-put-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Application for price-cut train from Sheffield to King&#8217;s Cross put forward"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Robyn Smith<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Hull Trains is wanting to launch a twice-daily return train between Sheffield and King\u2019s Cross, which would run through Woodhouse, Worksop and Retford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ticket prices would be cut by 30%, seeing a Saturday morning ticket dropping from \u00a360 to \u00a342 and a weekday morning ticket dropping from \u00a340 to \u00a327.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The application comes following the success of the Hull to King\u2019s Cross service previously introduced by Hull Trains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Open access <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Hull_Trains?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Hull_Trains<\/a> has applied to the regulator to operate Sheffield-London KX via the ECML.  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BTUK?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BTUK<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/richardsalkeld?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@richardsalkeld<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8R7HtzBwE1\">https:\/\/t.co\/8R7HtzBwE1<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Alex McWhirter (@McWhirterAlex) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/McWhirterAlex\/status\/1886836857385709577?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 4, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Richard Salkeld, Head of Communications and Partnerships for Hull Trains and Lumo said: \u201cOur fares are very competitive so we can give customers a lot more choice, if you look back to the old Hull trains, there was one service a day from Hull to London. Thanks to Hull trains there\u2019s now eight services a day each way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A consultation period comes following the application and a discussion with Network Rail is needed to secure the approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed schedule for the two daily trains are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield \u2013 London King\u2019s Cross depart at 9:20am to arrive at 11:44am and 16:54 to arrive at 19:14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>London King\u2019s Cross \u2013 Sheffield depart at 12:48 to arrive at 14:57 and 14:57 to arrive at 21:56.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Sheffield-Route-Simple-1024x640.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62255\" style=\"width:473px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Sheffield-Route-Simple-1024x640.png 1024w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Sheffield-Route-Simple-980x613.png 980w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Sheffield-Route-Simple-480x300.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Proposed Route for the Sheffield to London King&#8217;s Cross<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The route would have major sustainability benefits, offering a shift in mode of transport from road to rail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The price-cut would also bring great benefits to Sheffield as a whole, with Mr Salkeld saying \u201cIf Sheffield get a direct train service to London, there is enhanced opportunities and connectivity that come from that.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the route from Hull to King\u2019s Cross benefitting the University and the cities diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Salkeld added: \u201cThe University of Hull saw approximately a 45% increase in students coming to Hull from London and abroad. With the cultural diversity benefitting the city, it will help to boost its economic fortunes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The price-cut will also prove to be beneficial to students currently attending the University of Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Third-year Aerospace student at the University of Sheffield, Cade McCarthy, 20, who lives in Hertfordshire, described the current train fares as \u201cabsolutely extortionate\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cI think I would benefit a lot from it being cheaper purely because students don\u2019t have a lot of money as it is, and with the cost of living going up everywhere, it\u2019s nice to go home and have those comforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The route would provide Sheffield with its first regular service to King\u2019s Cross since 1968.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trains would run twice-daily under the new proposition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":744,"featured_media":62254,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[21,55],"tags":[1600,1601,38,1599],"class_list":["post-62250","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-top-story-3","tag-hull-trains","tag-kings-cross","tag-sheffield","tag-transpor"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
