{"id":62273,"date":"2025-02-20T13:28:49","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T13:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=62273"},"modified":"2025-05-08T13:36:58","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T13:36:58","slug":"sheffields-the-leadmill-loses-legal-battle-against-landlord","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/02\/20\/sheffields-the-leadmill-loses-legal-battle-against-landlord\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield\u2019s The Leadmill loses legal battle against landlord"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Robyn Smith<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The Leadmill has lost their legal case against the building\u2019s landlord Electric Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dispute has been ongoing since March 2022, when the current owners were issued an eviction order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Electric Group have said that they have no intentions of closing the venue, they may rebrand, no longer operating under The Leadmill name, with the current staff being replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement published on The Leadmill\u2019s X page last night, it said: \u201cWhile this is a challenging moment for our venue, we want to reassure our supporters, artists, and the wider community that there is no immediate timeline for what happens next.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They added: \u201cOur team is actively consulting with our legal advisors to assess our next steps. We remain committed to exhausting every possible legal avenue to secure our future, retain our staff and protect our venue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">An update from us here at The Leadmill \u2764\ufe0f<br><br>Our team is actively consulting with our legal advisors to assess our next steps. We remain committed to exhausting every possible legal avenue to secure our future, retain our staff and protect our venue <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9D9AEUwvXA\">pic.twitter.com\/9D9AEUwvXA<\/a><\/p>&mdash; The Leadmill (@Leadmill) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Leadmill\/status\/1892300878226329747?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 19, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s reported that all scheduled events are still going ahead, but ticket holders will be notified of any cancellations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The closure of the venue would come as a real blow to Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rosie Wallace, drummer of the Sheffield-based rock band Tradwife, says a closure would be \u201creally disheartening\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added: \u201cI\u2019m sure it will have a negative impact on small bands because it\u2019s such a fun venue to play at and it\u2019s really cool. There\u2019s also so much history there, The Leadmill has been there for so long.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Leadmill opened its doors as a venue in 1980, and Robert Smith, 53, from Sheffield has been attending gigs at the venue for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI supported the Leadmill throughout the whole \u2018Save the Leadmill\u2019 campaign and seeing that they\u2019ve lost their legal battle is such a disappointment. I\u2019ve been seeing bands here for years and it\u2019s such an iconic place that really supports the arts in Sheffield.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rebrand or closure would also be damaging to Sheffield\u2019s image, with their club nights being a big draw-in point for students all over the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liz Laughton, 21, a student at Sheffield Hallam University, says: \u201cI know the Leadmill isn\u2019t most well-known for its club nights, but they\u2019re really a standout in Sheffield! Losing the Leadmill, it\u2019ll be a real shame for students like me.
