supports East Asian families impacted by dementia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A charity which tackles the stigma associated with dementia within the East Asian community in Sheffield has hosted&nbsp;two events this February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some ethnic groups and immigrant families, the rate of diagnosis is significantly higher than in the native English population.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is due to historical immigration patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stephanie Chung, 41, founder of Changing Seasons said: \u201cThose people who came over in the 70s and 60s are now reaching the age where dementia might be posing problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"612\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/IMG_0171-1024x612.jpg\" alt=\"line graph of East Asian community in Sheffield\" class=\"wp-image-62474\" 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.changingseasons.co.uk\">Changing Seasons<\/a> is a project by Stephanie Chung that supports East Asian families and raises awareness on health issues, such as dementia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs Chung said: \u201cIt&#8217;s about bringing people together and being able to have these connections.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Asian culture, admitting that you are struggling can feel like a stigma or personal failure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr  Josephine Reynolds is a Sheffield University academic who researches racial equity in healthcare, and spoke at a Changing Seasons lunch for families experiencing dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: &#8220;There is still a lot of stigma within the community.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs Chung said: \u201cA lot of families tend to hide the fact that somebody might be starting to decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My grandma would mask the fact that my granddad was not as able as he once was.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe became like a child, and she had to take him everywhere, tell him what to do all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Changing Seasons also help with language barriers and access to healthcare, as this are the biggest challenges faced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Reynolds said: \u201cLanguage barrier is really problematic for that community particularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Particularly older generations do not speak that much English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;People tent to mainly retain their mother tongue language as dementia symptoms start to kick in.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a number of particular dialects spoken that adds difficulty in accessing treatment and medical advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This reluctance to discuss dementia openly often leads to delayed diagnoses, making it harder to put the right support structures in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dementia is one of the most growing illnesses, affecting people across all communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to<a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.sheffield.gov.uk\/documents\/s37690\/Sheffield%20Dementia%20Strategy%20Commitments%20Appdx.pdf\"> Sheffield City Council statistics<\/a>, up to 7,300 people over 65 currently living with dementia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/IMG_0183-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62476\" style=\"width:823px;height:auto\" 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dementia causes difficulties not only for people directly affected, but for their carers and families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs Chung said: \u201cFor my mother-in-law, her mental decline has been quite significant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI see the impact it has on my father-in-law, on my husband, and even on my children.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people forget about security measures that can be dangerous for them and people surrounding them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Changing season project is&nbsp;also about spending quality time together and having interactions, and that can also boost your mood, and that has a massive impact on your mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\"
