{"id":62530,"date":"2025-02-27T10:32:41","date_gmt":"2025-02-27T10:32:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=62530"},"modified":"2025-02-27T11:39:19","modified_gmt":"2025-02-27T11:39:19","slug":"1-in-33-autistic-patients-had-an-appointment-in-correct-time-frame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/02\/27\/1-in-33-autistic-patients-had-an-appointment-in-correct-time-frame\/","title":{"rendered":"1 in 33 patients with suspected autism had appointment in correct time frame, report reveals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A new NHS report has uncovered\u00a0that only 1 in 33 patients with potential autism in South Yorkshire had an appointment within the correct time frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The figures show that only 115 of 3,755 patients within the NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board&nbsp;with a referral of 13 weeks or more for suspected autism had an assessment within the correct time-period as of December 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liesje Dusauzay, the CEO of child autism charity Sparkle Sheffield said: \u201cIf the government did the right thing from the beginning we would not be here today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLong waiting times for diagnosis creates a lot of pressure for families.&nbsp; If you haven\u2019t got a diagnosis, you don\u2019t know where to go. There isn\u2019t any support for the parents. There isn\u2019t any support for the children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"954\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/unnamed-4-1024x954.jpg\" alt=\" Liesje Dusauzay\" class=\"wp-image-62526\" style=\"width:261px;height:auto\" title=\"Liesje Du\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/unnamed-4-980x913.jpg 980w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/unnamed-4-480x447.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Liesje Dusauzay <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At Sparkle Sheffield, Ms Dusauzay said they have seen an increase of 800% of patients, which puts a lot of pressure on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re not even getting funding to support the parents that are coming through, so the literal resources that we do have, we try to stretch as much as we can.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We can only do this for a short period of time. How do you sustain yourself as a charity when grants are also very hard to get?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nationally, less than five percent of the nearly 191,700 patients with a suspected autism referral that was 13 weeks  or more had their first appointment within the correct time-frame.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The time-period of 13 weeks for first appointment and assessment after referral was set by the National institute of Health and Care Excellence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average waiting time for the first appointment across England was 357 days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Dusauzay said that Sparkle Sheffield offers support to parents of autistic children dealing with long diagnosis or appointment waits:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got an advice drop-in that parents can go to. We also get professionals to come and talk to families online.
