As part of their mission to look after the cats in their care The Sheffield Cats Shelter have raised over \u00a31.5k to keep them warm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cosy Cats campaign finishes at the end of March with a final target of \u00a35k.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jordan Jonathan, The Sheffield Cats Shelter apprentice, said: “It’s important because we couldn’t physically turn the heat on enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We need to keep all the cats warm, and the hot water needs to be paid for too as we need to clean the litter trays every day.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shelter at Travis Place in Broomhall can get cold, meaning electric heaters have to be on constantly even when the sun is out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the office for National Statistics around 4 in 10 adults are using less fuel in their homes because of cost of living increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Jonathan said: “The young cats can run around and keep themselves warm, but the older cats who have been lap cats struggle. We have cats here sometimes that are 15, 16 years old. The heating is important.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shelter is constantly taking in cats to relieve them, prevent their suffering and works to vaccinate, neuter and rehome them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Millie Guthrie, The Sheffield Cats Shelter corporate fundraiser, said: “Old buildings like this are really hard to insulate because they’re generally one brick thick and there’s nowhere to put the insulation so we’re hoping to find a new building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In a new building we would be able to help many more cats too, and it would be more cost efficient if we’re in something more modern.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Run For All is collaborating with the shelter later this year, meaning people who sign up for their Sheffield 10k marathon on September 28 can choose to raise money for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Guthrie said: “We had a chap turn up the other day who’d been made homeless through no fault of his own and in his car he had four cats and one dog, and had been driving around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No other place was taking the cats, so we did. I don’t think we’ve ever turned away a cat.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
