That figure was also matched by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">But environmentalists have criticised the decision, saying flying makes up a significant and ever-growing proportion of the UK\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Climate Alliance, Chris Broome, said: \u201cReopening Doncaster\u2019s airport would be completely incompatible with a serious and adequate response to the climate emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is also less fundamental to people\u2019s well-being than other sectors, such as housing, energy and land transport, all of which are also failing to \u2018decarbonise\u2019 rapidly enough through existing efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cWe are also aware that experts are seriously questioning the soundness of the confidential business case for the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&#8220;That case will fall apart if much-needed and proportionate measures to moderate the number of flights people take, such as a frequent flyers\u2019 tax, are introduced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1647\" height=\"2195\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_8919-edited.jpg\" alt=\"A road sign of a roundabout - 'Robin Hood Airport' is the first (northwestern) exit.\" class=\"wp-image-63717\" style=\"width:513px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_8919-edited.jpg 1647w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_8919-edited-1280x1706.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_8919-edited-980x1306.jpg 980w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_8919-edited-480x640.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) and (max-width: 1280px) 1280px, (min-width: 1281px) 1647px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">DSA still appears on road signs nearly three years after its closure.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Speaking in February, Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones said: \u201cThe financial package will enable critical mobilisation works to continue and drive forward momentum in our drive to reopen the airport given its strategic importance to Doncaster, South Yorkshire and the North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cThe residents and businesses of Doncaster are behind us, proven by the over 130,000 people who signed a petition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&#8220;This is the people\u2019s airport and I will do all I can to ensure it drives forward economic success, new jobs, growth and prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_8930.1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"A view of the empty car park outside Doncaster Sheffield Airport's terminal.\" class=\"wp-image-63667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_8930.1-980x735.jpg 980w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_8930.1-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">There are vast amounts of empty parking spaces outside the terminal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Once re-opened, DSA would be operated by FlyDoncaster, owned by the City Council, alongside Munich Airport International and FP Services UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The airport originally operated from 2005 to 2022, with its closure meaning that Sheffield is the UK\u2019s largest city not directly served by a major airport.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An environmental group have voiced concerns about the planned re-opening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) next year.
