{"id":63862,"date":"2025-03-20T11:00:17","date_gmt":"2025-03-20T11:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=63862"},"modified":"2025-03-20T11:00:18","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T11:00:18","slug":"rotherham-council-defends-unfair-decision-to-double-adult-social-care-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/20\/rotherham-council-defends-unfair-decision-to-double-adult-social-care-prices\/","title":{"rendered":"Rotherham Council defends &#8216;unfair&#8217; decision to double adult social care prices"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Councillor responsible for adult social care in Rotherham has defended the decision to increase prices, calling it &#8216;the right decision&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The price rises are for various adult services as part of the council\u2019s budget for the 2025-26 financial year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Joanna Baker Rogers said:\u00a0\u201cIf you look at our charges over the last few years, they\u2019ve really not increased much at all. So on this occasion, we\u2019ve decided that we do need to increase the cost of adult social care services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main increases could see the cost of day care service more than double, from \u00a336.60 to \u00a373.50, to ensure services which give &#8216;essential support to many vulnerable people&#8217; remain available at the same quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further price increases will include a 31.5% increase in the hourly rate for in-home domiciliary care, and a 28.6% increase in Rothercare, the council\u2019s community alarm service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Adult-Social-Care-Price-Rises-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63890\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Adult-Social-Care-Price-Rises-1.png 1024w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Adult-Social-Care-Price-Rises-1-980x735.png 980w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Adult-Social-Care-Price-Rises-1-480x360.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bar Chart demonstrating differences in adult social care prices between 2024-25 and 2025-26.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But Coun. Baker Rogers says that the council is still prepared to support the most vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added: &#8220;Any cost increase is thought through very carefully, and we always want to make sure that everyone can afford to pay what they are asked to pay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liberal Democrat Councillor Adam Carter said: \u201cThese fee increases are another example of Labour\u2019s failure to protect the most vulnerable in our society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Labour-run council is out of touch with the struggles of our communities\u2026they are increasing costs for those who need the most support. This is not only unfair, but it\u2019s an attack on the vulnerable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillors heard that the rises are part of the council\u2019s wider effort to maintain quality and availability of services despite growing demand and rising costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coun. Baker Rogers said: \u201cIt\u2019s the right decision.
