{"id":64043,"date":"2025-03-21T12:43:36","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T12:43:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=64043"},"modified":"2025-03-21T12:43:37","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T12:43:37","slug":"wife-saves-husbands-life-after-donating-kidney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/21\/wife-saves-husbands-life-after-donating-kidney\/","title":{"rendered":"Wife saves Husband\u2019s life after donating kidney"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A wife from Barnsley saved her husband&#8217;s life when his kidney function was at an &#8216;all time low&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma Hodgson, 42, donated her kidney to her husband, Kieran Hodgson, 48, at the Sheffield Kidney Institute at the Northern General Hospital last month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Hodgson said: \u201cUp until six months ago he had been living a full and unrestricted life and then he went downhill really sharply. I felt like we were running out of time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The couple have raised awareness of living donor transplants, because since surgery, Kieran has not suffered with any of the symptoms he used to experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was diagnosed with a hereditary kidney disorder called polycystic kidney disease (PKD) 14 years ago.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peter Joynson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saka.org.uk\/\">Secretary of the Sheffield Area Kidney Association (SAKA),<\/a> said: \u201cTransplantation from a well-matched living donor is by far the best form of treatment for most people with chronic kidney disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, there can be a four-year wait for a matched kidney to become available, so there is a constant need to encourage more people to consider organ donation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SAKA is the local charity for kidney patients, and currently campaigns for more awareness through bus advertisements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"989\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_4357-2-1024x989.jpg\" alt=\"The image is of the back of a blue and orange bus with the SAKA advert that reads 'Waiting in traffic is frustrating, but waiting for a transplant is worse'. \" class=\"wp-image-64060\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_4357-2-1024x989.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_4357-2-980x946.jpg 980w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_4357-2-480x463.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The back of a bus with SAKA&#8217;s campaign advert on. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Albert C Ong, Professor and Head of Renal Medicine at the University of Sheffield, said: \u201cADPKD is the fourth most common cause of kidney failure and leads to 10% of patients requiring kidney replacement therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLiving donation is a first choice option in the UK if available due to the long waiting times for deceased organ donation and the longer survival of the donated kidney.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors at the Northern General hope to see an increase in the number of living kidney donations. In Sheffield, only about 20 occur yearly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PKD is caused by a gene mutation or defect, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Kidney diseases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jane Pugh, from the PKD Charity UK, said: \u201cWe invite patients and their family members at different stages of disease progression to come along for a full day, where they get to hear from clinicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt gives them an opportunity to feel less isolated and be around others that know how they feel and what they&#8217;re going through.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Pugh mentioned how the charity has held events like this in Sheffield before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pkdcharity.org.uk\/\">PKD Charity UK<\/a> funds and promotes scientific research to work towards a cure and aim to improve outcomes for those living with PKD.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A wife from Barnsley saved her husbands life, by donating her kidney to him. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":732,"featured_media":64048,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[18,21,82],"tags":[315,78,38,131],"class_list":["post-64043","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health","category-news","category-top-story","tag-health","tag-nhs","tag-sheffield","tag-south-yorkshire"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
