{"id":64316,"date":"2025-03-27T15:00:40","date_gmt":"2025-03-27T15:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=64316"},"modified":"2025-05-15T11:37:05","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T11:37:05","slug":"running-for-grandad-a-teens-fundraising-mission-for-rotherham-hospice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/27\/running-for-grandad-a-teens-fundraising-mission-for-rotherham-hospice\/","title":{"rendered":"Running for Grandad: A teen\u2019s fundraising mission for Rotherham Hospice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Sheffield teenager is set to run between the city\u2019s football stadiums to raise \u00a31,500 for Rotherham Hospice in memory of her late grandfather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daisy Oxley, 15, has decided to raise money for the Rotherham Hospice that took care of her late grandfather Brendan McCarthy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cThey just helped him feel comfort and made him feel at peace and not feel in pain before his death.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll the staff were really helpful, kind and polite so we knew that he was getting looked after really well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her mother, Amanda Oxley, 51, praised the hospice staff that went above and beyond to accommodate for her family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cThey said that they would look after my mum as well and make sure she was comfortable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They provided a bed for her to sleep next to my dad whilst he was going through this transitional stage of dying. That gave us great comfort to know that she was there whenever Dad needed her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That proved to be an invaluable time that\u00a0Dad and Mum spent together and that meant a lot to my mum as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"852\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image0-1-1024x852.jpeg\" alt=\"A grandad next to his grandadught\" class=\"wp-image-64324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image0-1-1024x852.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image0-1-980x816.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image0-1-480x400.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Daisy sat next to her late grandfather<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Daisy said that this led to her deciding to raise money for the hospice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s planning to run 5km between Bramall Lane and Hillsborough on 2nd April inspired by the fact that she comes from a football loving family.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She&#8217;s been preparing through bootcamps, weekly runs around the park with her mum and keeping up with playing football.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSometimes you just feel like you don\u2019t want to do it. But just think about what the end cause is about and at the end of the day who you\u2019re doing it for because I guess that almost drives me to do well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daisy has already raised almost \u00a31,000 and hopes to raise \u00a31,500 altogether.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was quite shocked with how many people have donated because I wasn\u2019t expecting a great deal but when I reached \u00a31,000, I was almost took back. Because a thousand is a different level for me and I wasn&#8217;t expecting it whatsoever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just excited to just complete it.
