Through the AWARE-IBD platform, patients shared experiences and shaped efforts to improve services in the areas most important to them\u2014access, personalised care, and communication.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Professor-Alan-Lobo.webp\" alt=\"Professor Alan Lobo talks about the groundbreaking research on the national stage Credit: Sheffield Teaching Hospitals\" class=\"wp-image-64490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Professor-Alan-Lobo.webp 900w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Professor-Alan-Lobo-480x320.webp 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 900px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Professor Alan Lobo talks about the groundbreaking research on the national stage&nbsp;Credit:&nbsp;Sheffield Teaching Hospitals<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Crohn\u2019s disease and ulcerative colitis are the most common forms of IBD, affecting an estimated 500,000 people in the UK and requiring lifelong management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 600 patients at Sheffield\u2019s Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Unit participated in a \u2018What Matters to You?\u2019 survey and co-designed a national toolkit to enhance communication with healthcare teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy Selman, 63, who has Crohn\u2019s, said: \u201cThe standard of care, diagnosis and treatment has been excellent, but it\u2019s the very positive contribution to the quality of my life, which is not always measured as part of a medical process, that has made a difference to me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Selman, who is from Sheffield, added: &#8220;With my symptoms under control, I have more energy and freedom\u2014now I can go on long walks in the Peak District which I find really good for my physical and mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"565\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Andy-Selman.webp\" alt=\"Andy Selman on a walk, by a lake with his dog \" class=\"wp-image-64491\" style=\"width:679px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Andy-Selman.webp 565w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Andy-Selman-480x510.webp 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 565px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo credit: Andy Selman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The study highlighted that many patients struggle with delayed diagnoses, poor access to specialists, and lack of continuity in care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers also worked with community leaders to address inequalities in treatment, particularly for underserved groups who are more likely to be hospitalised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenges faced by patients included language difficulties, mental health stigma, poor continuity with GPs, and cultural obstacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Lobo added: \u201cOur work has been nationally recognised, which is great for Sheffield.
