Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, was elected on Thursday, May 8, after a two-day conclave in Rome. He becomes the\u00a0first American\u00a0to hold the papacy and the first to take the name\u00a0Leo\u00a0in over a century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Sheffield,\u00a0<\/strong>the Very Reverend\u00a0Christopher Mark Posluszny, Dean of St Marie\u2019s Cathedral<\/a>, said the new Pope\u2019s connection to Pope Francis offered a sense of reassurance to many local Catholics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “He worked very closely with Pope Francis and was raised to be a cardinal by him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Much of his work was focused on justice, peace, workers\u2019 rights, and care for the environment \u2014 values that are similar to Pope Francis\u2019s vision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n He also mentioned that many Catholics in Sheffield are responding positively to the change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
