{"id":65766,"date":"2025-05-15T12:45:54","date_gmt":"2025-05-15T12:45:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=65766"},"modified":"2025-05-15T12:45:57","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T12:45:57","slug":"council-agree-plan-to-build-on-green-belt-despite-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/05\/15\/council-agree-plan-to-build-on-green-belt-despite-protests\/","title":{"rendered":"Council agree plan to build on green belt despite protests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The council have controversially voted to build on 14 green belt sites following a vote at the town hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protestors gathered yesterday at the town hall to dispute the 15 year Sheffield Local Plan which leader of the council, Tom Hunt, claimed to be a \u2018brownfield site first\u2019 plan, despite 3.6% of the city\u2019s existing green belt being made available to build on.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Hunt acknowledged in the meeting that building on Sheffield\u2019s green belt was a contentious decision but one which was necessary to meet the city\u2019s housing targets.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u2018\u2019This is an emotive subject and I understand the depth of feeling. Everyone needs to have their say. People of Sheffield will always have their say, they will be willing to listen and be fair.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018\u2019How many of us know adults who are living at home with their parents? How many of us worry that our children and grandchildren will not have the same opportunities as us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018\u2019It is so important that people have their say. Today is the beginning of that process, not the end.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leader of the Green council and head of the Housing Policy Committee, Douglas Johnson, said: &#8221;We oppose building on the green belt. There are developers who are circling and wanting to profit from it, but the council\u2019s current plan is very out of date.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A much larger percentage of the green belt would have been at risk of being built on if the council failed to agree on a new plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Johnson said: \u2018\u2019The consequences of voting against a new local plan would be disastrous to the city. It would mean developers can carry on relying on the old, out of date local plan, and they would be able to run rings around the council.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Susan Housley, Warren Lane, attended the protest against the council\u2019s decision to build on the 14 greenfield sites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u2018\u2019A couple of months ago there was no mention of building on any of the green belts. I don\u2019t know where this U-turn has come from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018\u2019I know there is pressure from the government for the council to produce plans which will meet housing targets. The council keep saying they want to build \u2018affordable housing\u2019 but that means something different to everyone.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan will help build 3,500 new homes as part of the central government&#8217;s plan to build 370,000 new homes every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"391\" height=\"477\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/affected-green-belt-sites-.png\" alt=\"Affected green belt sites: Land between Bramley Lane and Beaver Hill Road - 868 homes, a mainstream secondary school and a multi-faith burial site\n\nLand between Creswick Avenue and Yew Lane - 609 homes, a mainstream secondary school, a special needs school and a multi-faith burial site\n\nHandsworth Hall Farm, land at Finchwell Road - 870 homes\n\nLand to the east of Chapeltown Road - 549 Homes\n\nLand to the south of White Lane - 304 homes\n\nLand between Lodge Moor Road and Redmires conduit - 258 homes\n\nHolme Lane Farm and land to the west of Grenoside Grange, Fox Hill Road - 188 Homes\n\nLand between Storth Lane and School Lane - 103 homes\n\nLand at Wheel Lane and Middleton Lane - 148 homes\n\nLand to the north of Parkers Lane - 82 homes\n\nForge Lane - 69 homes\n\nLand bordered by M1, Thorncliffe Road, Warren Lane, and White Lane - general employment\n\nHesley Wood, north of Cowley Hill, S35 2YH - general employment\n\nLand to the south of the M1 Motorway Junction 35 - general employment\" class=\"wp-image-65794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/affected-green-belt-sites-.png 391w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/affected-green-belt-sites--246x300.png 246w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The majority of areas affected are to the north of Sheffield.
