Former dancer said the ballet was \u201cmesmerising and unforgettable\u201d as Lyceum Theatre

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Matthew Bourne\u2019s iconic reimagining of the Tchaikovsky classic,
featuring a male corps-de-ballet, brings a wave of excitement to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The Lyceum Theatre opened Tuesday night to packed rows and standing ovations for Bourne\u2019s
genre defying interpretation of Tchaikovsky\u2019s 19th-century classic. Famous for replacing the
traditional female corps with a feral, masculine ensemble. The psychological drama has shattered
ballet convention and become a touchstone of modern queer theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


\u201cA mesmerising tragedy, but also funny. It made me feel everything,\u201d said Laila Hart, 21, a former
ballet dancer now living in Crookes. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing we\u2019re getting to show queer love stories in this
medium that\u2019s so traditional, it\u2019s completely unlike anything I\u2019ve seen on a Sheffield stage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Hart, who trained in classical ballet, was struck by the dark energy and vivid sounds. \u201cYou can hear their breathing, the
intentional footsteps, the thigh-slapping,\u201d said Hart. \u201cThey become part of the music, everything
intertwined.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show\u2019s updated narrative focuses on the inner turmoil of the Prince and explores themes of
repression, loneliness and identity. Bourne\u2019s use of movement and altered structure in
Tchaikovsky\u2019s score gives the production a contemporary emotional depth.

Earlier this year, Bourne reflected on the work\u2019s legacy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen our Swan Lake premiered nearly 30 years ago it created a sensation that none of us could
have predicted\u2026 I\u2019m full of anticipation for the wonder it will bring to audiences who will
experience it for the very first time.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dubbed by some as \u201cthe gay Swan Lake\u201d, the revival explores the Prince\u2019s struggle with isolation
and suppressed desire. It\u2019s a ballet resonant with today\u2019s conversations around masculinity and
sexuality.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are so many gay men in dance, so it\u2019s really good that they\u2019re getting to dance with each
other and tell their own stories,\u201d said Hart. \u201cSheffield is such an artistic city, it\u2019s great to have
something like this right on your doorstep.\u201d

The production has been awarded three Tony Awards and an Olivier Award for its bold theatrical
vision. Matthew Bourne\u2019s sell-out Swan Lake runs at the Lyceum Theatre until Saturday, May 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
