{"id":66555,"date":"2026-02-12T11:40:45","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T11:40:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=66555"},"modified":"2026-02-12T11:40:49","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T11:40:49","slug":"how-the-bloomery-is-managing-sheffields-struggling-pub-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/02\/12\/how-the-bloomery-is-managing-sheffields-struggling-pub-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"How The Bloomery is managing Sheffield&#8217;s struggling pub culture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Bloomery, a popular student pub in Broomhill, has managed to stay busy as a result of student patronage, throughout a period where many others have been forced to close their doors for the final time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abbie Wright, an employee at the Bloomery, said: \u201cThis pub, in particular, heavily relies on the student population in this area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;During the day when everyone is at uni it\u2019s empty but in the evenings you never know how busy it\u2019s going to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approximately 80% of the Bloomery&#8217;s customer base is made up of students, with the pub benefitting from the many university socials and student bottomless brunches that it holds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image2smaller-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Outside image of the Bloomery pub.\" class=\"wp-image-66581\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image2smaller-980x735.jpg 980w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image2smaller-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Bloomery has benefited from student social events<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Wright said that one reason why pubs in the area are struggling so much is the cost of living crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cYou can buy a 10 pack of beer at the supermarket for like \u00a312, it costs \u00a35 for a pint here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pubs themselves also have their own struggles with business tax levels increasing every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beloved Sheffield pubs such as The Closed Shop and Three Feathers Darnall have recently closed due to financial instability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Wright pointed out that it is not only pub closures that are affecting Sheffield\u2019s night life: \u201cI have lived in Sheffield for five years, The Leadmill and Code used to be really big venues, but now those have shut.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that this might impact how many students come to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bloomery also attracts a non-student population, especially on the weekends, as they screen a lot of sports matches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wright said: \u201cIt\u2019s unique how many TVs we have, it gets really busy even with non-students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think if we didn\u2019t have that we would be struggling a lot more than we are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bloomery is currently part of a company called Stonegate Pubs, which also owns The Cavendish and The Slug and Lettuce,\u00a0but at the start of March they are being taken over by an independent landlord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wright said: &#8220;He has recognised that all of our customer base is students so he is going to be keeping our student bottomless brunches and student deals.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bloomery, a popular student pub, has managed to stay busy as a result of student patronage, throughout a period where many others have been forced to close their doors for the final time.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":822,"featured_media":66580,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[21],"tags":[15,38],"class_list":["post-66555","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-news","tag-sheffield"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
