{"id":66695,"date":"2026-02-13T12:09:34","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T12:09:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=66695"},"modified":"2026-02-13T13:40:29","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T13:40:29","slug":"playwright-creates-menopausal-resource-for-fellow-writers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/02\/13\/playwright-creates-menopausal-resource-for-fellow-writers\/","title":{"rendered":"Playwright creates menopausal resource for fellow writers\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The prolific theatre writer, Rachel Barnett-Jones, has created resource packs to support writers navigating the challenges of menopause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resource is part of the project, \u2018Writing the r(Age)\u2019, which has been designed to support writers&#8217; struggle with menopausal symptoms with an in person event to be held in the Crucible.&nbsp;  <\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fshefftheatres%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02eNmhkqBvNsk4MWAgahE84wPmy2eg6W1T9XeZviQmLhFKtMPkgTAh87sZdvXqArE5l&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"507\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mrs Barnett-Jones, 44, writer and founder of Sensible Creative, said: \u201cIn a creative job in a saturated market, it\u2019s easy to feel isolated and like you can\u2019t share any vulnerabilities with the people you are working with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Projects like this make it easier and essential to bring our whole selves to the job &#8211; because it\u2019s writers\u2019 vulnerabilities that make us great writers &#8211; so it\u2019s important to create structures in which we are empowered to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resource packs will be available for free from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sensiblecreative.co.uk\/projects\/menopausal-writers-1\/\">Sensible Creative website<\/a>, after Rachel herself experienced debilitating symptoms of peri-menopause, like crushing brain fog and aphasia (the loss of ability to understand or express speech).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cSuddenly not being able to focus or find words, the skill which sits at the very heart of everything I do, made me feel like I\u2019d never be able to work again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deborah Dickinson, Creative Development Director, said: \u201cThis project is a vital intervention that addresses a significant but often overlooked barrier in the creative industries. We hope to lead the way in fostering a more inclusive and sustainable environment, one where menopause doesn&#8217;t mean the end of a creative career, but a transition that is met with practical support and understanding.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs Barnett-Jones said: \u201cI hope that people will have an interesting and enjoyable afternoon and the panel discussion promises to be really interesting and shed light onto aspects of a writer\u2019s journey through menopause and the support that should be available to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The free workshop will be really fun and unusual &#8211; we\u2019re going to be harnessing the power of brain fog to create surprising pieces of writing.
