Sheffield Wednesday women’s team showed their support for the annual Football v Homophobia campaign during their weekend fixture against Altofts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahead of kick-off, Sheffield Wednesday players wore campaign shirts during their warm ups and stood behind a banner in support of the Rainbow Owls LTGBTQ+ supporter group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chris Ledger, founder of the Rainbow Owls, said: “Today’s game is celebrating Football v Homophobia to raise awareness of the issue of homophobia in our sport.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Ledger cited a 2022 FIFPRO\/Signify report which found that 40 per cent <\/a>of online abuse aimed at players contained homophobic language, with 27 per cent of that being targeted at female players.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the campaign is about more than symbolism and instead aims to spark much-needed conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Ledger does not believe there is a quick fix for abuse and in order to find long term solutions it is necessary for both players and supporters to understand the root causes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: “We\u2019re able to empower fans through banners and shirts, helping to create conversations between supporters and families.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Ledger praised the backing from the Owlesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: “Having the support from the woman’s team is amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“With both the supporters and the team coming together to support the campaign, the club has been able to build an environment where everyone feels comfortable.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, Mr Ledger said discussion is the true measure of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: “If today helps to spark those conversations, then it has done its job.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 2010, the Football v Homophobia initiative works with clubs and supporter groups throughout the UK to challenge homophobic abuse in the sport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campaign designates the majority of its work around its month of action, February, when it has previously delivered educational workshops, produced inclusive policy guidance and supported clubs in creating safer reporting systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
