A new 20mph speed limit is set to come into force in the coming weeks – a move aimed at improving road safety in Sheffield’s suburbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scheme proposed by Sheffield city council, covers a number of residential streets in the popular district of Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The council have pledged to create go-slow zones across 50 residential streets between Fulwood Road and Heavygate Road, including Crookes Highstreet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local resident Chiara Padovan said: “We live right on the high street…and to be honest it gets really busy and there are some dangerous drivers, people always speed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The planned areas consist of more than 40 residential streets as part of plans to improve air quality, promote road safety and encourage active travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new speed limit is part of a wider initiative by the council to enforce go slow zones in numerous neighbourhoods across the city. Over half of Sheffield’s roads are now 20mph zones, the council states 60 percent of residential roads now benefit from reduced speed limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the rule was enforced in Crosspool in 2022 Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Co-Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee said: \u201cThe benefits of 20 mph zones cannot be understated \u2013 they make streets safer and more pleasant places for people to live, especially for children and more elderly residents, and massively reduce the likelihood of serious accidents and long-term health impacts caused by air pollution.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of now their are no plans to enforce additional measures like speed bumps or cameras. Rather the aim of the new speed limit is to promote safer driving. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
