Sheffield Mencap and Gateway want to spark conversations, raise awareness and tackle social isolation for the learning disability community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
World Down Syndrome Day, held on 21st March to symbolise the triplication of the 21st chromosome, is being recognised locally through sports initiatives, community gatherings and awareness campaigns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The charity has said that they want the streets of Sheffield to be filled with ‘bright, bold \u2013 and probably bad taste \u2013 socks this March!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year\u2019s theme, \u201cTogether Against Loneliness\u201d, highlights the need for stronger social connections and inclusion for people with Down syndrome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Carol Cook, marketing, communications and fundraising manager for Sheffield Mencap and Gateway said: \u201cWe support over 700 adults and children with a learning disability in Sheffield, and their families. This is a community that still faces severe inequalities – including poorer health outcomes, social isolation and a lack of opportunities to live independently.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe want to raise awareness of the learning disability community in Sheffield – and we do this through Rock Your Socks. We want people to choose bright, or mismatched socks this Saturday, which is World Down syndrome Day, to show their support. Socks that stand out get people talking – and can start conversations about life with a learning disability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
