{"id":70858,"date":"2026-05-01T13:24:05","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T13:24:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=70858"},"modified":"2026-05-01T13:24:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T13:24:09","slug":"epileptic-man-had-seizure-in-sheffield-city-centre-last-week-and-no-one-stopped-to-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/05\/01\/epileptic-man-had-seizure-in-sheffield-city-centre-last-week-and-no-one-stopped-to-help\/","title":{"rendered":"Epileptic man had seizure in Sheffield city centre last week and no-one stopped to help"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Sheffield man with epilepsy is calling for more seizure response awareness after no-one helped him during a seizure in Sheffield City Centre.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe Robbins, 29, has been epileptic since he was five, and has experienced seizures throughout his whole life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biomedical scientist was walking home along Glossop Road in the city centre on 21 April when he had a seizure.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cIt was a busy day in the lunch rush, and I woke up and I was on the ground completely unaware of what had happened. It took me a second to come around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s a postictal effect which causes a lot of memory loss and a lot of confusion, and after I got home it occurred to me that no one had come to my aid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Robbins added usually someone will check that he is breathing or conscious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere were plenty of people around when I blacked out, so I can only assume they thought I was drunk or high or something.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI felt disregarded and prejudged but also vulnerable. I could have died in that moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FEpilepsySociety%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0jtoTDri1ZuNivbYRorm8DEYwBW8E9X9FT2iHxd3NkaAVWVYnjziaUfR1bi62GJE1l&#038;show_text=false&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"498\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Robbins, along with many other epileptic people, is at risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approximately one in 1,000 people with epilepsy die from SUDEP each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cMy seizures are more frequent when I\u2019m more anxious or vulnerable, quite often when I\u2019m out and about, but usually there\u2019s someone with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 8 April , Mr Robbins had a similar experience on West Street in the city centre when no-one came to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cI&#8217;m a very resilient person because I&#8217;ve been living with it for 20 years now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut it is a hindrance, always having to be dependent on someone. I&#8217;m always having to rely on someone to almost keep watch over me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt feels like you&#8217;re a child that needs to be cared for and that impacts my sense of independence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Robbins is calling for more education around epilepsy awareness, urging people to help in these life threatening events.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says if you notice someone having a seizure, you should go over, check their responsiveness and breathing, see if you can find a necklace or bracelet with emergency details and call 999.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cEven if it helps save one life by speaking out about this, that\u2019s enough for me.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Sheffield man with epilepsy is calling for more seizure response awareness after no-one helped him during a seizure in Sheffield City Centre.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":765,"featured_media":70860,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[415,18,21,82],"tags":[2182,2183,38],"class_list":["post-70858","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community","category-health","category-news","category-top-story","tag-epilepsy","tag-seizures","tag-sheffield"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
