{"id":70939,"date":"2026-05-07T10:50:36","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T10:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=70939"},"modified":"2026-05-07T10:50:40","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T10:50:40","slug":"flying-the-flag-for-our-region-rowan-campbell-pilling-on-gb3-and-his-ambitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/05\/07\/flying-the-flag-for-our-region-rowan-campbell-pilling-on-gb3-and-his-ambitions\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Flying the flag for our region&#8217;: Rowan Campbell-Pilling on GB3 and his ambitions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A promising young Sheffield motorsport racer has spoken about his ambitions for the future after a strong start to his season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield&#8217;s Rowan Campbell-Pilling, 19, finished fifth, fifth and seventh in his series debut at Silverstone, and leaves as the highest-placed British driver in the standings in fourth place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarded as the final step before reaching the Formula 1 ladder, the GB3 Championship got underway on April 23rd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;Some of my idols have come through the GB3 Championship, and an awful lot of Formula 1 drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Recently the most successful to come through is Luke Browning, who is doing Super Formula in Asia alongside his role as Aston Martin Reserve Driver.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He hopes to follow in the footsteps of former British F4 champion George Russell and last season&#8217;s Formula 1 World Champion Lando Norris, who competed before the category was rebranded in the 2021 season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2026 GB3 Championship \u2013 Round 1 \u2013 Silverstone GP\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E9dA_YehDho?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Full races are available to watch on YouTube.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With a big gap until the next race weekend, starting May 29th, Campbell-Pilling is enjoying his down time in more ways than one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;I&#8217;ve been doing a lot of training and a lot of simulator work, and then just a lot of downtime to rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The weather has been lovely at the moment, so I&#8217;ve been doing a bit of gardening, being out in the Peak District, and spending time with family and friends &#8211; just keeping myself busy really.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/8-RL2_45331774473179920.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-71007\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/8-RL2_45331774473179920.jpg 450w, https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/8-RL2_45331774473179920-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Campbell-Pilling on track at Silverstone. Credit: Jakob Ebery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He currently races for the Dubai-based Xcel Motorsport but, for young drivers, securing a long-term future in the sport depends largely on backing from sponsors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campbell-Pilling said: &#8220;We have great support from a lot of businesses in Sheffield and South Yorkshire. The commitment you get from them is incredible and, likewise, they get back what they put in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Whatever we can help them with, we will always try our best to do that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Something that is very close to my heart is flying the flag for our region, which this year has been all across the world.
