{"id":71549,"date":"2026-05-14T12:20:51","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T12:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/?p=71549"},"modified":"2026-05-14T12:29:28","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T12:29:28","slug":"university-of-sheffields-christian-union-offer-free-drinks-outside-of-the-student-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shefnews.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/05\/14\/university-of-sheffields-christian-union-offer-free-drinks-outside-of-the-student-union\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Sheffield&#8217;s Christian Union offer free drinks outside of the Student Union"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Representatives of the University of Sheffield&#8217;s Christian Union have gathered outside of the Student Union building by the city centre to serve free drinks and make conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Christian Union is part of a larger organisation, the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF), a group that has existed for over 100 years in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sheffield branch aims to help encourage students from all church backgrounds to chat, ask questions, and think about what their faith means to them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have events and talks all-year-round, including social activities and gatherings, evangelistic events, many of which are designed to &#8220;answer the big questions&#8221; surrounding Christianity and the faith that surrounds it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They hold weekly meetings at the SU, prayer groups, and Bible reading impact groups, including local church meetings, too.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FShefUniCU%2Fposts%2Fpfbid032ButP5f3ZTbYprArHv3wMLSyocAg3AmwqzZka9MAYdcJFNs62buxYbfCWQZgA3FCl&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"416\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to some of the members at the organised coffee stand offered some insight into some of the Union&#8217;s beliefs and aims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are handing out free coffees, free hot chocolates, and free chats,&#8221; said representative Lydia Flannigan, 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If people are interested in what we&#8217;re talking about, it&#8217;s a really great place to meet us &#8211; in an informal environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Union&#8217;s website, Christianity is &#8220;not based on a set of rules, or going to church on Sunday, or even being a good person.  Christianity is for those who know they aren&#8217;t perfect, and are in need of forgiveness.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Union runs &#8220;Church Search&#8221; every year, that allows newcomers to try out local churches, helping those that are nervous about joining a new &#8211; or their first &#8211; church alone.  It also helps newcomers make new connections and friends, as members will often offer to take newcomers with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the churches included in this local selection include Antioch Community Church, Christ Church Endcliffe, City Church, and St John&#8217;s Ranmoor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Union is open to new students, including freshers, inviting them to Impact Groups, a place where their community can grow and encourage each other to share their faith.
