Sheffield’s NHS support service has experienced a concerning rise in the number of referrals for eating disorders because the problems have not been dealt with at an early stage.

South Yorkshire health bosses believe more serious cases have been presented due to less face-to-face interaction during lockdown.

Caterina Whitworth, 19, who is recovering from an eating disorder, said: “During the pandemic we are isolated as there are less face-to-face interactions with work colleagues or teachers who are the people that usually notice something is wrong and direct you towards help.”
