Sheffield Wednesday have been cleared of overcrowding and safety concerns following last month’s FA Cup victory over Newcastle United.

Sheffield City Council commissioned the safety review which found “all aspects” of safety requirements were met.

Councillor Joe Otten, Sheffield City Council, said: “We have carried out a thorough review looking at all the evidence available as well as speaking to fans, officials and stewards who were present on the day. 

“Our findings show full compliance at the stadium and no issues relating to the matchday operation. Some minor changes have been identified to improve the overall experience.”

The investigation concerned The Leppings End, where 4500 Newcastle fans watched a 2-1 loss on the 7th January.

In 1989, at Hillsborough Stadium, 97 Liverpool fans died whilst hundreds were injured in a human crush in The Leppings End, whilst watching an FA cup semi final against Nottingham Forest.

Fans have complained about some of the media coverage being unnecessary reminders for the victims of the HIllsborough tragedy. 

Richard Stokes said: “I believe the Daily Mail owes Sheffield Wednesday an apology for your very poor and scaremongering piece of journalism.

“I hope the Liverpool families affected take legal action against you for the physiological reminders.”

Matchday Complaints 

The investigation, overseen by the Sports Ground Safety Authority, was sparked by complaints of crushing circling online from the travelling Newcastle fans.

Newcastle fans online complained that too many tickets were sold, and that there were not enough stewards, resulting in a crush.

Liam Dooley, Sheffield Wednesday Chief Operating Officer, said:

“We would reiterate that the stewarding numbers within the visitors’ section of the stadium for the Newcastle fixture exceeded the requirements of the Safety Certificate.

“The Newcastle ticket allocation also complied completely with the Safety Certificate.”

Fans have praised Sheffield Wednesday and the council for the way they have handled the safety complaints.

Andy Hodgson said: “Wednesday have handled this brilliantly, with the necessary steps and time taken.

“Some praise for the council too, good to see the two working together efficiently.”
