A Sheffield social enterprise company says it has saved 62 tonnes of food from landfill which could make more than 150,000 meals.

Food Works Sheffield is dedicated to creating sustainable life by upcycling food that would otherwise go to waste. It aims to bring people together for change and empowers people to take care of the planet.

Kathleen Farrand Green, a volunteer at Food Works, who has worked for the company for three years, said: “I’ve been volunteering for three years here and there are customers that have been coming for three years. We have customers that have become volunteers as well, so we’ve got a really nice crowd of people that support us and we support them.”

The company collects quality food surplus and locally grown ingredients to make meals. Meals are frozen on site to retain flavour and quality as much as possible. It is known as Just Meals.

Despite the ongoing cost of living crisis, community organisations across the city, such as Food Works, continue to provide vital support to struggling families.

Kathleen said: “I think everyone is thinking of how to save money and organisations like ours can help. Also, people who genuinely can’t afford food can come here.”

Food Works provides people in Sheffield with around one million meals worth of food every year while reducing our carbon footprint similar to a forest of 50.000 trees.

Just Meals are a great alternative to the conventional ready meals and and can be heated in the microwave or oven at home. They are packed in biodegradable and give back more to the planet than they take.

Just Meals can be bought over the counter at Food Works Sharrow, Upperthorpe and Handsworth and are available at all Food Hubs a minimum contribution of £1.00. You can also subscribe to a meals collection service.
